Learn to rest Art Journal page – STAMPlorations mixed media tutorial

Hello everyone, it´s my turn again today to share another mixed media tutorial over at the STAMPlorations blog! Are you ready for the weekend and some creative time? I am! I love creating pages for my art journal lately, so I am always very much looking forward to weekend and crafty time. Today I´d like to share another art journal page with a motivational quote with you. Here it is:

I played with my stencils again and this time, instead of using spray inks to create the background, I used Distress Paints. I love how they also react with water  and create lovely blendings onto the background.

After creating the first layer, I went and added paint directly to the stencil, then pressed the stencil onto the page to make „letterpress“ patterns on top the first layer. Also I saved all the residue ink from the kraft sheet and the stencils by wiping and dabbing it onto a spare sheet of white cardstock. I always keep one around for paint residues like this. These random pieces can be added as bits or as a background to a future project.

Next I placed the stencil onto the page and dabbed some pink paint thru the flower stencil directly onto the page, creating flowers. I also started with the lightest tones of paint and gradually added darker shades to create more depth and contrast.

One of the stencil got used as a doodling guide to create the leaf patterns here and there. Then I just simply colored (very randomly) them with a darker green tone of paint and a water tank brush.

In the end I added several tones of spray inks as splatters onto the page and also drew some additional patterns with paint pens here and there.

Finally, all I needed to do, was to add the quote. I just first made sure the paint layers were all dry. Otherwise I´d ruin my pen with the wet paint. If you have tried to write on wet paint once or twice, you learn to be patient  :-). I´ve again recorded a start-to-finish for you to watch! Hope you enjoy the video!

Happy stenciling!!

Be fearless – STAMPlorations Stencil Sunday

Hi there and welcome to another STAMPlorations Stencil Sunday! Today I´d like to share a Art Journal page with you again.

At the moment I am totally addicted to using Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists like watercolors and creating bold and colorful backgrounds with them as my starting point.
I then build my page from there using a Senecio 1 ARTplorations stencil (one of my own designs) with Peacock Feathers Distress Oxide ink on top of the „watercolor“ background. I love how there is that occational shine on the background and then lots of colors combined with a fun stencil image and of course, a quote! Cannot seem to be able to make a page without those anymore.
The word „fearless“ is a STAMPlorations stamp. The rest of the words are hand written using Posca pens. I am liking my handwriting on this piece again alot. So glad I am making progress with my writing and to have discovered the style that also pleases my own eye.
I´ve outlined the stencil images with a black pen to create a little more contrast to the apge and then added some white gel pen details onto them too. That creates a little more dimensional look to the images. That´s it for me today, hope you find some time to play along with the STAMPlorations January mixed media challenge! See you there!

Happy stenciling,

January Mixed Media Challenge reveal – STAMPlorations

Hi there, we are starting the new year off with a bunch of challenges at STAMPlorations. Today it´s time to share the January Mixed Media challenge with you.

Here is what I made for the challenge reveal – a art journal sheet with a motivational quote:

I´ve said it before, and I´m saying it again here. I LOVE QUOTES! My art journal features many quotes and I find that the pages I like the most are the ones with motivational quotes. I am also starting to like my handwriting a lot better. I´ve found a way to add it to my work in a way that is is pleasing to the eye. This has not always been the case. I´m glad that I´ve figured my type of lettering out for me :).

What I also love is color. So I´ve added plenty of that here. I added water to the background and then picked some Glimmer Mist spray inks with a paint brush from the spray bottles and let them spread into the wet page on their own. I REALLY LIKE the results. It´s a happy page that makes me feel really motivated and positive about the new year.

After the spray ink had dried, I added the stamped bird images (STAMPlorations stamp) onto the page and finally finished the page off with some stenciling. I draw the stencil pattern onto the page with a fine tip black pen, then inked the leaves with blue Glimmer Mist and after all the layers had dried properly, took a Posca pen and wrote the motivantional quote to the page. It´s easy to say that this is my fave page so far, as it happens to be my first AJ page this year. LOL! But I really, really like how it turned out. Note to self: create more pages!

OK, so now it´s again your turn to make some mixed media art and join our challenge with your projects! Read the rules on how to play along here and then submit your work! Would love to see you join in and play along with us! There are also prizes to be won, so go on and get your creativity mode on :). Have fun and see you at STAMPlorations!

Don´t force pieces – Art Journal page

Hello lovelies, time for another art journal page share! February was a month I created quite a few pages into my art journal. I just felt like creating a page every other day. And it felt good!!! Could be that all the things that happened to us/me in February made me create all those pages. Who knows…

I seem to create art journal pages to keep an emotional diary of some kind. Every page is combined to feelings I had been experiencing/going thru around that time. That is why I also always add a date to the page I create. And quotes, yes, they follow me around :). Again a very quote dominated page, that I created:

I didn´t use gesso on this page at all. I played with Glimmer Mists and used them like water colours and I love how this page turned out. It feels so me. The colours are very much me too. I think you could call this technique intuitive. I added colours, let them spread on their own and then added lines and patterns to emphasize the edges of various colours.

And I love this quote!!! Need to remind me over and over again that there are things we cannot force. Some things happen, others don´t, however hard we want them to happen. Such is life. What I don´t like, is my handwriting. I cannot seem to get it right, always looks a bit odd…but here, even the letters worked out great. Maybe the secret is to keep it simple. Maybe my handwriting is like this… I love brush lettering and calligraphy, but I would need to be patient and practice lots…which is not going to happen any day soon, so better be happy with what I got… *laughing*.

I think I am going to call my 2017 art journal the „Talking to myself“-book, as I always seem to end with some kind of wise words on color and media :-).

Wishing you all a lovely, creative day!!!

Fairytales Art Journal Sheet

Hi there, lovelies and happy Sunday! I´ve been trying to create in my art journal on more regular basis the past days. Just adding color, texture and quotes or sayings to a page. Nothing too complicated or too time consuming. And it feels good to just add a few lines, a few colors and a date. I find it really good to add a date to every page to tell  me when I did what. I think it will be also interesting to see how my pages develop from one date to another. Here is what I did yesterday (I´ve done a few before this, but sharing those later..):

I had a piece of blue paper with a speech bubble on it that said: „No one is too old for fairytales“. I felt I wanted to add that sentiment into my art journal. It´s slowly turning into an artful quote book. Almost every page has a quote or saying of some kind on it. I really like collecting quotes this way.

I´ve painted the background dark with acrylic paint, then let the paint dry REALLY well, before adding the hand drawn leaves, firefly´s and „flowers“. I´ve learned my lesson after destroying ton´s of black and white pens in the process of being totally impatient. The paint really needs it´s drying time and there is no way around it. After that you can doodle, journal and add details with pens and markers and it will work out. I did my doodling with a white gel pen (uni-ball), then added some colour with Posca pens.

It´s a fairytale forest of a kind, I guess. I´ll leave you with this page today. I created it with nothing special in mind, just had a fun playtime in my art journal and added another page with a date. I am hoping that I will develop during these daily (well, at least weekly) exersizes and that when I look back in a year or so, I will be happy I took the time. Will also be interesting to see what kind of themes come up :). Very relaxing, too, this kind of art time :). Have a great day!!!

Let´s stay creative,
