Make Art Discoveries – STAMPlorations Stencil Sunday

It is Sunday which means that it is time for another STAMPlorations Stencil Sunday! For this weeks inspirational post I created a mixed media home decor piece – a wall hanging of a kind. I call it “Make Art Discoveries”.

It all started with the mini hanger which is by Jillibean Soup. It comes in a set of two and measures ca. 5,5 inch in width. I started with a piece of kraft cardstock that I sprayed darker with Tattered Angels Baseboard tone Cardboard. Next I cut a piece of eco dyed fabric (learned how to do it from my lovely friend Tina last summer) into a suitable size. I added some hand stitching around the edges. Now I am not very talented with yarn and needles, but it doesn´t matter if the result is not that perfect. Next I placed the ARTplorations “Hidden Hearts” stencil onto the fabric and added green iridescent creative medium onto the fabric thru the stencil. The media is by Imagine Crafts and I love it!!! Since it is iridescent on a light background you will not see it in the photos that well..therefore I took this against the light photo above. Here you can really see the shimmery background pattern quite nicely. After the paste was dry, I glued the fabric onto the background with a strong fabric glue (Beacon Adhesives). Then I started adding bits and pieces.

The butterfly on top is a flea market find. It is a cookie/pastry form which I filled with a turquoise burlap piece, then applied some turquoise Silk Microfine Glitter on top and finished off with a layer of Judi Kins Diamond Glaze. I let it dry a little before adding the word (thank you, Lizzy, love these words you made!!), the red yarn and the half pearl on top. Finally I finished it off with some green glass glitter. It needed to dry out properly before I could use it, so I left it to rest for days.

The next piece is a found object – a regular stone. I just added the work “make” (from Tim Holtz Idea-ology Big Chat sticker sheet). And decorated the edges with Gold Stickles.

The wooden scrabble letters are by Papermania Bare Basics. I adhered those onto the chipboard piece with gel medium (by Faber-Castell). The chipboard piece is misted with grey spray ink (I used the same Hidden Hearts stencil to create the pattern) and then decoreated with Gold Stickles.

On the very bottom there are two wax seals I made and on top of those I added a Tim Holtz Idea-ology word band “Discoveries”. The orange paint is the Heavy Body Tangerine paint by Dina Wakley. I attached the word band with a piece of twine. All pieces and the eco dyed lace piece underneath are adhered on their places with gel medium. Once it is dry the pieces will not come off :). I also added a few stamples here and there for additional grungy detail and to make sure the fabric piece can carry the weight of the decorational elements.

Finally I added a few white paint droplets here and there very freely to finish this piece. It will decorate my art corner in our house later. I sure had a fun time creating this stenciled mixed media piece. I hope you will get inspired to create something fun for your home with stencils too!!! And don´t forget to check out the current Mixed Media Challenge over at the STAMPlorations blog. There is still enough time to join in with us!!!

Happy creating!!
